Our next webinar in the series, “Creating Value: Assessing the Return on Investment in Complete Streets” will take place on Thursday, March 23, 2017 from 1:00-2:00 PM EDT. Co-host Stantec will join the Coalition in answering questions such as: How can benefit-cost analyses emphasize the value of Complete Streets? And what can advocates do to make Complete Streets a higher priority in city and state budgets? This webinar will explain how to plan and design Complete Streets projects to make them more competitive for grants. On Tuesday we released Dangerous by Design 2016, new research looking at the epidemic of pedestrian fatalities across the United States and how changing the way we build our streets can help address it.
Boise, Denver, Greenville, Minneapolis, Nashville, and Pittsburgh are six of the many cities using a new strategy for economic development. Rather than offering tax breaks to lure companies, these cities are creating walkable, vibrant, inclusive neighborhoods that are attracting residents and employers, supporting existing businesses, and fostering entrepreneurs.
We talk about this new approach in our most recent report, Amazing Place: Six Cities Using the New Recipe for Economic Development. The report takes an in-depth look at the development strategies at work in these six cities, and is designed to show communities everywhere how to create diverse and durable local economies that last beyond the lifecycle of any one employer.
As part of Tuesday’s kickoff for the new report, we hosted an online conversation about creating these amazing places. Participants heard an overview of the guide as well as a detailed discussion about development in Denver, Greenville, and Pittsburgh. A recorded version of the webinar is now available.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is taking action to encourage more Complete Streets projects across the state through its Complete Streets Funding Program. Last week, we hosted a webinar highlighting the program.
Complete Streets integrates people and place in the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of our transportation networks. Hundreds of communities across the country have already adopted Complete Streets policies—the next step is to implement them.
Last week the National Complete Streets Coalition held a webinar that offered transportation planners, engineers, and practitioners insights about turning policies on paper into changes on the ground. The webinar provided an overview of the Complete Streets planning-to-design process; how Complete Streets and active transportation are impacting communities’ health and economy; get tips on what to consider when starting a Complete Streets project; learn strategies for design retrofits; and hear case studies of places that have done it successfully.
On Tuesday we released our annual analysis of Complete Streets policies from across the country in 2015. As part of the kickoff, we hosted an online webinar all about the new report. The speakers talked about the state of the Complete Streets movement, provided an overview of last year’s policies, detailed Complete Streets components of the FAST Act, and discussed how the top-policy communities of Reading, Little Rock, and Park Forest are taking their Complete Streets work to the next level.
At the end of the event we took questions and answers from listeners. Unfortunately, we were only able to answer a fraction of the questions that were asked. We’ve taken a few minutes here to answer the rest.
